James Stirling was a Lands Department officer based at Omeo who later became
Victorian Government Geologist. At various times Stirling collected in the
alps in company with Mueller, who named
Helychrysum stirlingii in his honour. Besides papers on the physiography
of Victoria's alps, Stirling published comprehensive accounts of the alpine
    flora (Stirling 1883 & 1885, 1886).
