 Marriner, George Henry   (1853 - 1928)
Marriner, George Henry   (1853 - 1928)Born on 2 April 1853 in London, England; died on 24 October 1928 in Colac, Victoria, Aust.
His father, George Marriner (c 1834-1900),
came from Middlesex, England, arriving in Geelong (Vic) in
     1857.
He was a railway labourer for eighteen months before
moving to Colac, where he was employed as a gardener by
district pioneer Hugh Murray. In 1860 he was employed at a
nursery at Colac East, two years later acquiring it and naming
it Fulhamn Nursery (possibly after the London suburb, the site
of many well-known nurseries). Catalogues were issued; that
of 1877 contained an extensive listing of 'coniferae, shrubs
greenhouse plants, fruit trees, etc, including 196 named fruit
     trees.
     Marriner's oldest son, George Henry (c 1853-1928), a
taxidermist, was interested in botany, which led to a friendship with Ferdinand Mueller, who often visited the nursery.
Marriner's
second son, William (1861-1951), a skilled propagator and
respected flower-show judge, worked at the nursery, taking
over management in 1891. It remained in his family's hands until 1996.
