Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria |
Born in Perth, Western Australia, on 22 January 1914; died 1 January 1983.
He studied botany at the University of Western Australia.
During his long and varied career he spent five years as a plant and seed collector for the Kings Park and Botanic Garden, and many years studying and advising on the flora of the north-west.
He also promoted the
importation of exotic plants that were considered well suited to the Western Australian
landscape. His work included planning the selection and planting of street trees in the
tropical Kimberley town of Broome with Marion Blackwell in the 1970s, many of which
dominated Broome's streetscapes until most were ultimately destroyed by Tropical Cyclone
Rosita in April 2000.
He supplied a great number of collections for the Botanic Garden,
including herbarium specimens, and often travelled with Kings Park staff,
particularly John Beard.
The seed collections made by Lullfitz formed the foundation
of the Kings Park seed collection, which is an important conservation resource.
He was a life member of the West Australian Wildflower Society.
Fred also dabbled in movie film, leaving a collection of early vegetation clips now held by the State Library:

Among his scientific contributions is his collection of the type specimen of Acacia anaticeps.
Lullfitz is honoured by Lullfitz Drive in Broome, two conservation priority species, Banksia
lullfitzii C.A.Gardner, and Grevillea lullfitzii McGill., and Chamelaucium lullfitzii
N.G.Marchant.
