Born in Mecklenburg, Germany, in 1841; died in Moonta, South Australia on 15 May 1910.
He was a chemist in Moonta and member of the Pharmaceutical Society of South Australia. He has numerous series of plants from Moonta and Parkerville from the period 1888-1891, collected on Yorke Peninsula, SA.
From shipping records we know that 'Mr. Ernest BEYTHIEN', aged 14, arrived on the ship 'La Rochelle' on 2 September 1855 (having left Hamburg on 29 May 1855). His occupation is listed as 'Chemist'.
Four other children with that surname are listed as passengers on the 'La Rochelle', along with a male Carl Gottfried Theodor Beythien aged 40, widower.
